What is Stem Cell Therapy?

Stem cell therapy is a cellular therapy emerging as a frontline regenerative medicine source. Essentially, stem cells are harvested and then injected at the site of disease or damaged tissue, so reconstruction of the tissue is feasible under the right circumstances. Cells can be collected from blood, fat, bone marrow, dental pulp, skeletal muscle, and other sources. What Are Stem Cells?

Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that are capable of giving rise to indefinitely more cells of any type. They are the “building blocks” of the body. They have the remarkable potential to develop into many different cell types in the body and serve as what can be accurately described as an “internal repair system,” replenishing other cells. Each divided cell has the potential to become another type of cell with a specialized function, such as a muscle cell, a red blood cell, or a brain cell.

Are There Different Types of Stem Cell Therapies?

Yes, there are different types of stem cell therapies including fetal/embryonic (illegal in the U.S.), amniotic fluid, placental tissue, autologous (your own), umbilical cord blood stem cell (UCBSC) and stem cells from Wharton’s Jelly (also from the umbilical cord).

Which Type of Stem Cell Therapy Does Body Pro Do?

At BodyPro Integrative Wellness Center, we focus on umbilical cord blood stem cells (UCBSC), cells from Wharton’s Jelly as well as Bone Marrow Autologous cells as therapy.

How is Stem Cell Therapy Administered?

Stem Cells are administered into a patient’s body through joint injection, intramuscular injection, or IV infusion to maximize the therapy’s reach.

Where Do These Stem Cells Come From?

UCBSCs and Wharton’s Jelly Mesenchymal Cells are derived exclusively from the umbilical cord tissue of healthy birthed babies and healthy mothers, which is the safest and least-invasive method of extraction available.

How Are These Stem Cells Harvested?

After a child is born, the mother may donate the umbilical cord to a tissue bank. The tissue bank then screens the umbilical cord for any diseases or viruses (e.g., HEP A, HEP B, HEP C, HIV, cytomegalovirus, etc.). The mother is screened as well. Once the tissue is safely screened and accepted for human use, jelly (called Wharton’s jelly) is scrapped from the umbilical cord and cryogenically frozen.

Is This an Ethical Practice?

Yes, it is a very ethical practice, as the baby has been born, no one is harmed in the process, and the umbilical cord is outside the body–no surgery is involved.

How Do Stem Cell Injections Work?

Unlike normal drugs, stem cell injections don’t just mask the pain. They regenerate new cells and tissue–pinpointing the impaired areas, removing the swelling with powerful anti-inflammatory properties and healing them, and modulating the body’s immune responses.

What Can Patients Expect from Treatment?

Who Heals Faster?

Babies will heal faster from a cut than an adult would, as they have more mesenchymal stem cells (MSC). MSCs repair muscle, bone cartilage, and tendons. As we age, our MSCs rapidly decline, so it takes longer to heal and recover and we are more prone to aging and disease.

Are Stem Cells FDA Approved?

The FDA does not approve nor deny the use of stem cells currently. This is mainly because the FDA approves or denies drugs and medical devices. Stem cells do not fall into either category. The FDA does, however, set guidelines for the safety of the use of stem cells, and we meet all of those guidelines.

Is Umbilical Cord Stem Cell Therapy Safe?

Cellular Regeneration is FDA cleared because of its safety! The cells are rigorously tested and screened under the National Institutes of Health, the Food and Drug Administration, the American Association of Tissue Banks, and the American Association of Blood Bank’s guidelines.
Because Umbilical Cord Blood Stem Cells are less mature than other cells, the body’s immune system is unable to recognize them as foreign and, therefore, they are not rejected. Over one hundred thousand patients have been treated with umbilical cord blood stem cells, and there has never been a single instance of rejection (graft vs. host).

What are the Benefits of Stem Cell Therapy?

The major benefits of umbilical cord blood stem cell therapy are:
  • The injection is done as an in-office procedure;
  • The stem cells are derived from an umbilical cord of a healthy baby and mother (human umbilical cord);
  • The stem cells are undifferentiated – no HLA matching so no potential allergic reaction;
  • The therapy is simple, fast, and safe (administered through an IV or into a joint);
  • The dosage is customizable for an individual;
  • The stem cells are potent, robust, and clean;
  • The dose is concentrated and consistent (CD34 and hematopoietic stem cells); and
  • There is no surgery or recovery time involved.

How Many Treatments Are Required?

The number of treatments required varies per patient. Based on previous research, the body responds very well to one treatment, but some patients may benefit from a second therapy 3-6 months later.

Umbilical cord and Wharton’s Jelly-derived stem cells reproduce every 28 hours for approximately 90 days for 65 generations.

Generally, most of our patients need only ONE application of stem cells to feel like they’ve achieved the desired result. The mesenchymal stem cells that we use are extracted from the blood and gelatinous material from umbilical cords of healthy babies. These cells are loaded with potent cells and growth factors, which assist in multiplying your native stem cells into new tissues like cartilage, bone, tendons, ligaments, menisci and more. As a result, one application of stem cells can achieve an improvement 85-90% of the time.

For patients with autoimmune diseases, they are encouraged to test and discover the trigger(s) of their conditions while learning an anti-inflammatory lifestyle. If you can discover the triggers of your condition, it will assist you in taming your immune system from future attacks against your tissues so that one application of stem cells might be enough to create your desired result.

Are There Any Potential Side Effects?

There are a couple of potential side effects for you to be aware of including:

  • Possible discomfort due to the injection.
  • Flu-like symptoms (affecting 2% or fewer patients, very rare).

Are There Any Restrictions After Treatment?

Your health care professional may advise you to limit physical activity briefly after therapy and to limit anti-inflammatory drugs before and after treatment, as experts believe inflammation is necessary for stems cells to work.

Does Insurance Cover Stem Cell Procedures?

Insurance does not cover stem cell procedures, as Medicare Guidelines, Section 2251.3 states, “A treatment plan that seeks to prevent disease, promote health, and prolong and enhance the quality of life; or therapy that is performed to maintain or prevent deterioration of a chronic condition is deemed not medically necessary…”

Note, though, that this therapy is still less than the cost of most surgical copays and insurance deductibles.

Do You Use Stem Cell Therapy to Treat Diseases?

We don’t use stem cell therapy to treat diseases, such as cancer. We use stem cell therapy to help the body heal itself!

This therapy is also not recommended for pregnant women, patients with active cancer, or for people who have massive infections.

How Long Does Treatment Take?

In general, the actual injection takes 10-20 minutes, which includes the time for cleaning and prepping the area, making the injection points, and giving the actual injection.

How Fast Will You See Results?

Every patient is different, but typically patients start to see results within 4-6 weeks. Some patients, however, report immediate results.

Does This Treatment Guarantee Results?

Since stem cell therapy is a regenerative process, there are no promises for results.

Are There Any Potential Downsides?

Some patients may experience a longer time to see results because they take longer to heal.

How Much Does It Cost?

What Are Your Options?
